What is the Inca Trail?
The Qhapaq Ñan, known worldwide as the Inca Trail, was the vast network of roads that connected the Inca Empire. Today, the most famous route is the one that leads to the citadel of Machu Picchu, considered by many to be one of the best trekking routes in the world.
There isn’t just one «Inca Trail.» To reach the citadel through the mountains, there are different options. Below, we detail the most popular:
- Classic Inca Trail (4 days / 3 nights)
This is the most iconic route. It covers 43 kilometers (26 miles) of impressive Inca architecture.
- Short Inca Trail (2 days / 1 night)
Ideal for those seeking the experience of entering through the Sun Gate without the physical exertion of the full 4-day trek.
- Salkantay Trek (5 days / 4 nights)
Although technically not the official «Inca Trail» with government permits, it is considered the second most popular. It offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped Salkantay Mountain.
- Inca Trail Lares (3 days / 2 nights)
Perfect for lovers of living culture. This trek passes through traditional Andean communities where you can interact with locals and see textiles and llamas.
